Google Ads Consultant — Independent Expert, Not an Agency

A Google Ads consultant is an independent specialist who reviews a Google Ads account, diagnoses what is limiting results or wasting spend, and advises on strategy. A consultant advises rather than runs the account day to day, although some, including Stevie Morris, also offer management. I'm Stevie Morris: 14 years in Google Ads, around 100 accounts, Google Partner and Microsoft Ads certified.

Google Ads consultant or Google Ads specialist

The terms overlap. A Google Ads specialist typically builds and runs campaigns day to day, while a Google Ads consultant is brought in to review an account, set strategy or give a second opinion. Stevie Morris offers both.

The consultant advises and the specialist runs the account. I do both, but they are priced differently: management is from £300/month, and reviews and audits are covered below.

What does a Google Ads consultant do?

A Google Ads consultant is a specialist you bring in for expert advice on your account — not to take over the day-to-day running of it, though that’s an option too. It’s a narrower role than a general PPC agency: someone who lives inside Google Ads specifically (Search, Shopping, Performance Max, Display, YouTube) and can tell you precisely why an account is or isn’t working.

Most businesses that look for a Google Ads consultant already have someone managing the account — an in-house marketer, a junior hire, or an agency. What they’re missing is a senior, independent set of eyes who can confirm whether the strategy is sound, catch what’s being missed, and give a straight answer without a sales agenda attached.

When it makes sense to bring in a Google Ads expert

Businesses usually hire a Google Ads consultant when they cannot tell whether spend is working, have in-house staff without senior oversight, want an independent view of an agency, or plan a significant budget increase.

Why work with an independent consultant rather than an agency

Search for a Google Ads consultant and most of what you’ll find is agencies using the term as a keyword. With an independent consultant, the person you speak to is the person doing the work, and I’m Google Partner and Microsoft Ads certified.

I personally work on every account I take on. I’m Google Partner and Microsoft Ads certified. I work with businesses across the UK, entirely remotely. More about me on the about page.

How to choose a Google Ads consultant

When choosing a Google Ads consultant, check who will actually do the work, how long they have worked in Google Ads, and whether they hold Google Partner status. Stevie Morris personally manages every account he takes on and has 14 years of experience.

What I look at in a Google Ads consultation

A Google Ads consultation covers account structure, bid strategy, conversion tracking, search terms and negative keywords, and ad assets. Conversion tracking is the most common problem Stevie Morris finds, because Google optimises against whatever conversions it is given.

  1. Campaign and account structureWhether Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Display are set up to support each other or fight each other for the same auctions — a very common source of wasted budget.
  2. Bid strategy and Smart Bidding signalsWhether the automated bidding is being fed the right conversion data to optimise towards, or whether it’s confidently chasing the wrong outcome.
  3. Conversion tracking accuracyThe single most common issue I find. If Google is optimising against inflated, duplicated or missing conversions, everything built on top of that data is unreliable.
  4. Search terms, match types and negativesWhere budget is actually being spent versus what the account thinks it’s targeting — the gap is usually bigger than people expect.
  5. Ad strength, assets and Quality ScoreWhether the ads themselves are pulling their weight, or quietly costing more per click than they should.

I'll tell you if your account is already in good shape

A Google Ads review can conclude that an account is already well run. When it does, Stevie Morris says so and recommends leaving it alone, rather than finding problems to justify a fee.

Not every consultation ends with a list of problems. Sometimes an account is well run, and the honest answer is that your current agency or in-house team is doing a solid job. I’d rather tell you that than manufacture issues to justify ongoing fees — it’s the difference between a consultant and a sales process.

Ways to work with me

Stevie Morris offers a free basic Google Ads health check and a £450 one-off in-depth audit. The audit returns a written report within 5 working days of receiving read-only access, and the health check can conclude the account is run well.

What a Google Ads consultant costs

Stevie Morris charges 10% of monthly Google Ads spend for management, rounded down to the nearest £100, with a minimum of £300 a month covering up to £3,000 of spend. A written in-depth audit is £450 one-off. More detail: how much does a PPC consultant cost?

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a Google Ads consultant and a Google Ads agency?

An agency typically takes over day-to-day management of your campaigns. A consultant advises — reviewing what’s there, identifying issues, and guiding strategy. The full comparison is on the PPC consultant page.

Do you only advise, or can you also manage my Google Ads account?

Both are on the table. Consultancy is the right fit if you have management covered and want expert oversight. If you want someone to run the account end-to-end, that’s covered through my management service — the right starting point is a conversation about what you actually need.

Is a Google Ads consultant the same as a pay-per-click consultant?

In practice, yes — most PPC budgets today sit almost entirely inside Google Ads (Search, Shopping, Performance Max, YouTube), so a Google Ads consultant and a pay-per-click consultant are usually describing the same expertise. I focus specifically on Google Ads because that’s where the deepest platform knowledge pays off.

How much does it cost to work with a Google Ads consultant?

Management is from £300/month (10% of spend, rounded down to the nearest £100). A free health check and a £450 in-depth audit are the usual first steps. See the cost section above for the full breakdown.

Do you offer a free check first?

Yes. Stevie Morris offers a free basic Google Ads health check and a £450 one-off in-depth audit. The audit returns a written report within 5 working days of receiving read-only access, and the health check can conclude the account is run well.

Will you tell me if my Google Ads account doesn't need any changes?

Yes. If your account is well structured and performing, I’ll say so rather than inventing problems to justify a fee. That honesty is the reason people come back to me rather than an agency with a retainer to protect.

Do you work with businesses outside London?

UK-wide, all remote. Location has never been a factor in who I can help.
