What a PPC consultant actually does

There’s a version of consultancy that’s just a dressed-up sales pitch for management services. That’s not what this is.

When you hire a PPC consultant, you’re buying senior judgement — someone to look at your campaigns with fresh eyes, tell you what’s wrong (or what’s actually fine), and give you a clear view of what to do next. You might already have an in-house team or an agency running your ads. You might be running them yourself. A consultant’s job is to be the person in the room who knows Google Ads deeply and has no reason to give you a rose-tinted answer.

With 12 years in Google Ads and £2M+ in ad spend managed directly, I’ve seen most of the mistakes, and most of the situations where things looked wrong but were actually fine. Both matter.

When to bring in a consultant

Independent advice — not a sales funnel

The difference between hiring a consultant and hiring an agency is what they’re incentivised to say. An agency has a reason to make your current situation sound more complicated than it is. A consultant’s only output is honest advice.

If your campaigns are actually fine, I’ll tell you that. It’s happened. The advice in that situation is to leave things alone and focus your energy elsewhere. That’s a legitimate outcome of a consultation, and it’s better than spending money fixing something that isn’t broken.

How a typical consultancy engagement works

  1. Discovery callWe talk through your business, your current campaigns and what you’re trying to understand or solve. I’ll tell you upfront whether a consultation makes sense or whether you’d be better served by an audit or full management.
  2. Account access and reviewYou grant read access to your Google Ads account. I review the structure, spend, performance and tracking before we go any further.
  3. Advisory sessionWe meet to go through findings, priorities and recommendations. You leave with a clear picture of what to do — whether that’s changes to make yourself, things to ask your current agency, or a longer-term plan.
  4. Follow-on support (if needed)Some clients want a one-off session. Others want ongoing advisory support — a regular check-in, access to ask questions, or someone to sense-check decisions before they’re made. We can discuss what fits.

On pricing

Advisory and consultancy work is quoted based on scope and frequency — there’s no fixed off-the-shelf price for every situation. Ongoing management starts from £300/month as a reference point. For advisory or fractional work, book a call and we’ll agree something that reflects what you actually need.

What's the difference between a PPC consultant and a PPC agency?

An agency runs your campaigns for you on an ongoing basis. A consultant provides senior advice, strategy and oversight — often working alongside an existing agency or in-house team, or advising a business owner who manages their own ads.

Can you advise on my existing agency's work?

Yes. A second opinion on your agency’s strategy, account structure or reporting is a common and legitimate use of a consultant. You don’t have to be unhappy with your agency to benefit from an independent view.

Do you offer fractional PPC support for Devon businesses?

Yes. Fractional consultancy — where I’m available on a regular basis to advise, review and guide without doing full management — is something I offer to businesses who need senior input but not a full management service.

How much does a PPC consultation cost?
